A Room of One's Own Day 2025

January 25 was A Room of One's Own Day.

It was also Opposite Day so one of my children was trying to get away with things by saying the opposite. Silly child.
When I could (that evening), I celebrated A Room of One's Own Day relaxing in my bedroom. I read The Hobbit. I took a nap. I read some more of The Hobbit. You know. The usual.

Catching Up January 2025 Part 3

January 19 was Brew a Potion Day and National Popcorn Day and Whisper "I Love You" Day. There were definitely whispers of "I love you" that day. Somebody made popcorn.
I'm not sure what this is. It definitely looks like some sort of potion. It's possible it is Chicken Tortilla Soup since that was what was on the menu plan for that day. Catching up isn't always easy when I'm making assumptions months later.

January 20 was Penguin Awareness Day. We ate fish sticks and started watching some penguin movie.

January 21 was National Hug/Hugging Day and Granola Bar Day. Some of us ate granola bars. Some of us also got some good hugging in.

January 22 was Hot Sauce Day. Lucky loves hot sauce and puts it on a lot of things.
Speaking of Lucky and his love of hot sauce, for Christmas he got a bunch of little bottles of hot sauce so one evening, we had a taste test, starting with what was supposed to be the mildest and working our way to the hottest. We dipped chicken nuggets in them to try them out. I'll be honest, that was fun.

January 23 was Pie Day. I made a pudding pie using a homemade graham cracker crust that had been sitting in our freezer for a long time.
I also had a Relief Society activity that night.

January 25 was A Room of One's Own Day
January 28 was Blueberry Pancake Day. I think we had blueberry pancakes. I think. But I don't see pictures so... who knows?
That day, Lucky went to an event at the Orem Library: Winter in Narnia. He made a shield and a dragon and did other activities.
While he was at his event, I was left unsupervised. I only had two items on my list to check out but... I ended up with a lot more. After I took this picture, I picked up even more to check out. Tee Hee. I love the library.

A Day Off?

It seems the last few times I'm going to take a day off, someone's sick and it doesn't work out. I let everyone know that I was going to take a day off for A Room of One's Own Day on January 25. I said I'd make sure everyone got where they needed to go but that was it. Once they kids were home, they were on their own and they had to take care of Jet. Dinner was Fend For Yourself. I had plans for doing stuff in my room.
Of course the night before, Lucky was sick so I kept him home from school the next morning. When he got up, he was fine. Yay. I was exhausted, though. I fell asleep once the other kids were at school and slept for a long time. Once Jet got up he and Lucky played together. Nice. So I definitely got some time to myself in my room but it was not what I was planning.
I did say it was FFY for dinner but I ended up throwing some pasta together for people to do whatever with.
I finally got a picture of me in my room last minute, too. To celebrate the holiday.
I've had better times celebrating this holiday in the past but... oh, well.

A Room of One's Own?

January 25 was A Room of One's Own Day. I got maybe an hour or two total to myself in my room that day. I had such plans, too.
We got a new microwave delivered and Jet was so cute playing in the box.
He found some tongs and sat on my lap in my room to play with them.
Jr. decided to do homework in my room.
I just had to go out and see Nichole's artwork she was working on. She's taking a printmaking class this semester. If you give Nichole and medium...

A Room of One's Own Day 2022

I made it very clear to the kids that Tuesday, January 25, was going to be my day off. I would make sure they got to and from school then after school they were to take care of themselves and each other, including dinner and Jet. I had plans for how I was going to relax that afternoon/evening in my room for A Room of One's Own Day. I have fond memories of celebrating this holiday in the past.
It was to be my day off.
Sigh. Days off haven't worked very well for me lately, though. I won't go into all the details. Here are just some.
While the kids were at school, Jet and I started inventorying the pantry. Oh, he had fun by the end throwing things out of boxes as soon as I put them in. Oh well. Toddler. I didn't get everything put away by the time it was time to go get Nichole and Jr. from school so after picking up Jr. and setting sleeping baby down, I finished up. By the time I finished the others were home and people were asking me for things even though they knew it was my day off.
I went to my room for some well needed Me Time then every five to ten minutes there'd be a knock on my door from kids wanting things. Then I could hear them fighting as well. I had plans for what I was going to do to relax in my room that day. Sigh.
I don't think it went as well as I hoped. It was not relaxing at all. And the one picture I got was of something I took while inventorying.

The next day, January 26, was Spouses Day. I told Jeremy I wanted to support him that day. It turns out he and I both had the same idea on how to support each other with dinner for these two holidays. Winco salads and pizzas. Jeremy stopped by the store and picked up a pizza for the kids and salads for himself and me, mine that I could eat in my room on A Room of One's Own Day.
That was what I had planned to do for Spouses Day. Pizza for the kids and salads for us. I did it anyway. So we had the same two days in a row.

Earlier in the day on Spouses Day, Jeremy invited Jet and me to go walking with him. As soon as we got out of the van at our destination, Jeremy pointed out a bald eagle sitting in a tree. It turns out there were several bald eagles in trees and flying around, both adults and juveniles.

An eagle landed in a tree along the trail as we were walking back. I was about to get a picture when I saw another flying so I waited for it to get in the picture so I could get both birds.

We had a lot of fun. It was good getting out. And I was so happy to see bald eagles.

Jet (waving): Bye, Bald Eagle.

Jeremy: Oh no. The dilophosaurus is eating you.

Jeremy and I did little things throughout the rest of the day to support each other. I love my husband.

Perhaps You'd Like to Chew... On Your Fist

We celebrated Chinese New Year on January 25. It's the year of the rat, the metal rat.
I love how "helpful" our children are. I wanted to get a picture of the Chinese food we made (Jeremy made most of it, I wrapped the egg rolls). I had my arms full of baby again so Lucky offered to take a picture of the food. What a sweetie. Of course even standing on a chair he was too short to get all the food in the picture from the angle he was at but it's the thought that counts.
Jeremy was also a sweetie and held Jet while I ate.
There have been times in the past where we have watched Kung Fu Panda for Chinese New Year. Fun movie. There is a line toward the beginning of the movie where a character says, "I see you like to chew. Perhaps you'd like to chew... on my fist." Jet has gotten into chewing on his fist lately, including on Chinese New Year so we've been going around saying, "Perhaps you'd like to chew... on your fist." It's the small things, I tell you.
After dinner and fortune cookies, Jeremy took the four kids (as compared to the one baby) to the mall for the Chinese New Year celebration over there.
Apparently it was very foggy that night so instead of coming home when they were done, they hung out in the van until it was time for fireworks. We can normally watch the mall fireworks from our house, but not in that kind of fog.

While they were gone, I celebrated a little of A Room of One's Own Day, also January 25. I often spend quite a bit of time in my room anyway with this new baby in cold/flu season (I look forward to Spring but I'm glad I'm not stir crazy). While Jet slept, I got out my new foot spa I got for Christmas and was using it while wearing my comfy new bathrobe when Jeremy and the kids got back.
Earlier in the day I did get the room to myself to take a nap while Jeremy took care of Jet. Thanks, Jeremy. And thanks, Jet, for being content while I got some rest.

My Day Off

I took a day off yesterday.  January 25 is A Room of One's Own Day.  I look forward to that holiday every year.  I even put on the menu plan "Fend For Yourself, Mom's Day Off."  Jeremy was so wonderful to do dinner for everyone, including me.  I didn't have to fend for myself.  He's so sweet.
It was nice to have some time off.  Lucky did come in a few times and watch a little of the movies I was watching.  And after school, some kids kept having questions for me.  For the most part, though, I was able to have uninterrupted time to go through some papers I needed to organize (still have so much to do) and I made a nice dent in my mending box.  I didn't take any pictures but it was nice.

Here's a picture of a pumpkin pie I made for Pie Day, January 23, though.

Jurassic Park Marathon

January 25 is A Room of One's Own Day.  Today, I took a day off.  Well, most of a day off.  Jeremy did have to go do some work stuff and was gone for several hours.  But I was able to spend most of the day in my room... alone.  I put on the first three Jurassic Park movies as background noise as I went over some organizational stuff.  Jeremy brought me food from time to time.  He's so awesome.
I also took time for dinner with the family and Family Home Evening.  Jeremy got the kids to bed and after they were in bed, he and I watched Jurassic World.
It was a dinosaur day for me.

A Room of One's Own Day

A Room of One's Own Day, January 25, is a holiday that I'd like to celebrate every year.  To have a day to myself in my room doing what I want to do- reading, watching movies, doing crafts, resting, whatever I want.  It's a good excuse for Me Time since it is a holiday.  But having a room to myself doesn't always work out.
Last year I was able to take some time for myself in my room.
I didn't blog about it, but the year before last I was able to celebrate the holiday with some relaxing time in my room.  I was reading The Secret Garden and was able to eat snacks and Jeremy even made me a lovely garden salad to fit the theme- a secret garden salad.  I do appreciate him.
This year the time in my room was spent taking care of Lucky.
The rest of my time was spent catching up on some dishes and laundry and taking care of the kids.  Oh well.  My family's worth it.  Nichole and I had a nice talk this afternoon.  The boys and I had a nice dinner together while Nichole and Jeremy were out this evening.
I'll try to take some Me Time soon even if it's not for a specific holiday.

A Room of One's Own Day (Observed)

You know how you have plans for something, or to celebrate a certain way, and it doesn't turn out exactly the way you wanted?  I had that happen this week.
January 25 was A Room of One's Own Day.  Friday wasn't going to work for me, so I wanted to celebrate A Room of One's Own Day (Observed) on Thursday.  I had it planned.  I was going to be motivated and get so much done earlier in the week, then Thursday I could spend all day in my room doing whatever I wanted.  I would watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  I would clean off my bureau.  I'd relax.  Thursday was going to be my day in my room.
Monday was good.  Jeremy and got to go see The Hobbit.  Kids got to play with friends.  Then I got sick.  I spent Tuesday lying on the couch.  I did get some naps in.  My wonderful husband took care of so much.  He and Jr. cleaned the kids' room.  He actually motivated that little kid to help.  Wow.  Wednesday was a little better, but I still didn't feel up to going out.  Since I missed a meeting for church that evening, I spent that time on lds.org getting ready for another meeting coming up.  I got so much out of it that I got up Thursday morning (feeling much better) to continue.  I spent quite a bit of time researching what I needed, some in the living room, some in my room.

But I didn't do as much on my day in my room as I thought I would.  Or I didn't do as much as I was planning.  I still did a lot.  I didn't watch any Lord of the Rings.  I didn't get around to cleaning off the bureau.  But I did get quite a bit done in there.  I got some things packed away in the closet.  I made my bed.  I fixed some things that needed fixing.

I uncovered a lot of floor space.  I still have some boxes to go through.  When Jeremy was cleaning his office, a lot of stuff ended up in our room.  It's a step in the right direction, though.
 Before and After
And I didn't spend the whole day in my room.  I did some dishes and laundry because I wasn't able to when I was sick.  I joined the family for A Wrinkle in Time reading at bedtime.

So, a room of one's own.  Sort of.  Not exactly as I had planned, but still good.  Flexibility.  That's important.  And progress.  That's important, too.
