So You Want to Know About August, Huh?

Let's see. August. Well, I learned from Sarah M. Eden (one of my favorite authors) a little bit about Lammas Day which was on August 1. It's a celebration of harvest so it's common to bake bread on that day. So that's what I did. I baked wheat bread that day.

August 4 was American Family Day. We played together. For a couple days before that, we played the game my brother made up that we played with my brothers in Oregon.

\August 5 was Work Like a Dog Day. Jr. and I did yard work.

Later that evening, I took three of the kids with me to the Provo Library to an interactive movie event: The Princess Bride. They had instructions for us on paper for things to do at certain parts of the movie (yelling, "Stop! Stop!" during the kissing scenes, and rhyming with Fezzik) as well as items to do them with (balloons for swords, pieces of chocolate for the miracle pill, bubble wrap to pop in the Fire Swamp). It wasn't just interactive with the movie but with people around us, too. We had little bottles of water that we traded with a neighbor several times during the iocane powder scene until we finally took a drink. It was a lot of fun.

August 6 was Night Out Day. While I left the kids with root beer and ice cream to celebrate Root Beer Float Day, Jeremy and I took a drive up to Kyhv Peak Overlook to watch the sunset and eat Winco salads (it's our date food). I'd never been up there for sunset before. Jr. Jr. and I went up there for sunrise last year before October General Conference. It was nice to be up there with Jeremy for the sunset.
That day was also Wiggle Your Toes Day. I may or may not have played "This Little Piggy" with Jet but I didn't get any pictures if I did. I know I wiggled my toes, though.

August 8 was Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night. Nobody celebrated at our house. Sigh.
That evening, Jeremy, Nichole, Lucky, and I went to the annual Utah County Birders potluck. We spent time beforehand looking for birds but barely saw any. Oh well. Still pretty scenery near Timpanogos Cave National Monument.

A Few August Celebrations

August 5 was Work Like a Dog Day. I made the kids work hard...
with the occasional dance break.

It was also Night Out Day. The van needed gas so Jeremy and I took a quick jaunt out to the gas station together that night.

August 7 was Raspberries 'n Cream Day. We didn't have raspberries but we had fresh blackberries our neighbors picked so I made cupcakes which we topped with whipped topping and blackberries. Close enough.

August 8 was Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night. Nobody put any on our porch but friends gave us some zucchini later so we could celebrate the holiday observed. Sweet friends.

What They Missed- August 6

Friday, August 6-
This was not really a "I need a do over day" but I did take it kind of easy. I was feeling a little under the weather. That and the heavy smoke in the air outside made it unpleasant.

See our beautiful mountains?
Me neither.

We didn't get much done that day.
It was National Water Balloon Day so the boys watched a show with a water balloon fight in it. It was Wiggle Your Toes Day. We did do that. It was Fresh Breath Day so we ate some mints. It was Lucille Ball's Birthday so the boys ate some "yum yum balls" (Whoppers). Jr. Jr. thought he would be funny when he put "yum yum balls" on my shopping list before the trip. He was surprised and thrilled when I actually brought a box of Whoppers home for them to eat on Lucy's birthday. I did manage to make root beer floats for Jr. Jr. and Lucky to celebrate Root Beer Float Day.

Jeremy and the older two continued to work hard.

They had fun, too.

What They Missed- August 5

Thursday, August 5-
Work Like a Dog Day. We danced to The Beatles music including "A Hard Day's Night" because of the line, "I've been working like a dog."
Dip

I worked hard that day. The boys rebuilt the fort and played with Jet a lot so I could get a lot done.
It was also Oyster Day so we snacked on Oyster Crackers.
Jeremy and the two oldest worked like dogs, too. And in the words of The Beatles, they "should be sleeping like a log."
Jr. denies he was sleeping in this picture but Jeremy assured me he was in that position a good half an hour before he woke.

Work Like a Dog Day 2020

Well... I've had more productive Work Like a Dog Days. This year I did work like a dog for part of the time on August 5 when I gave four people haircuts. Some were definitely needed. All turned out well. That will help with going back to school.

Towel Day 2020

Memorial Day, May 25, no school. Heh. Work hard with good attitudes and we'll be rewarded.
After a morning of laundry, dishes, weeding, and working in the garage (with only a little distraction from a snail in the backyard- click to see Nichole's pictures larger),
we celebrated National Brown-Bag It Day with a picnic in the front yard. It's a good thing we sat on our picnic towel because May 25 was also Towel Day.
There were Western tanagers flying around so the kids and I put some orange halves in the trees in the backyard.
Back to work. Then dinner and Family Home Evening. Since we didn't get to watch Going Postal for World Turtle Day on May 23 (there wasn't enough hard work with good attitudes), Nichole picked it for her FHE activity.
Continuing with Towel Day celebrating, Jet kept a towel under his seat while having some oatmeal.
Nichole, Jr., Jeremy, and I watched The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
