We went to the Orem Public Library today to sign the kids up for their Summer Reading Program. We were talking to some of the librarians how there seem to be so many reward systems for reading. I'll be honest, our kids just like to read. It's reward in itself, but... we're going ahead with some reading reward programs this summer. They'll be doing it anyway. Why not keep track and get a little something extra for doing what they love?
I told Nichole and Jr. they could each pick one book to get from the library today, since we have quite a few library books at home already. They picked the first books they found. That's fine. The theme for the library's reading program this year is "Be The Hero of your own story." The first books the kids found were... hero themed books. That's fun.
Of course Mommy didn't have a limit of how many books she could pick (I only picked two this time, most of the ones I wanted were checked out) and Jr. Jr. doesn't understand the concept of only one yet. He kept bringing books to the kids who got interested in reading them. This is what we ended up with when we were going to limit the number of books we checked out.
The DVDs on top are for Jeremy since he's got a lot of balloon sculptures to build this week, and TV series on DVD are pretty nice to have in the background while he's working.
And since today, June 5, is also National Gingerbread Day, first, I didn't want to put the effort into making gingerbread men (remember our gingerbread zombies at Christmastime? Those were fun) because I don't want to use the oven very much until our swamp cooler is fixed, and second, I decided to check out The Gingerbread Man to read to the kids.
Maybe sometime we'll eat gingerbread men while reading the story.
By the way, if you're in the area of the Orem Library next week from Monday evening on, go see the balloon sculpture Jeremy's building for the kickoff events for the Summer Reading Program. Two years ago, we built Wonderland. Last year, Jeremy built figures from different places in the world.
This year, well... you'll see.
Summer reading is another great reason to celebrate.
Books! I love books. So many books.
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to sign us up for the Provo Library summer reading program each year. We loved to read. Nothing was better than getting a new book of fairy tales or legends from the library and sitting underneath our slightly defective swamp cooler in the hallway that spit out water droplets and reading, reading, reading.
ReplyDeleteOh yes. I used read so many fairy tales when I was a kid. That was definitely my type of story as a child. We didn't go to the public library much as children since we lived out of town. But I loved the school library, and I'm glad my parents had a lot of books at home.
ReplyDeleteWe are making our first summer reading trip to the library next Monday. Brendan is excited.
