Hodge Podge Halloween

The last few days of October kind of became a hodge podge of Halloween and other holiday celebrating. Some things were celebrated on their day and some were celebrated "observed." So here we go.

I asked Jet a while back what he wanted to be for Halloween. He told me, "Batty." I definitely went with a joke in there but also decided I could make him bat wings so he could be "Batty." Jeremy made bat ears for him.

He loved his bat wings so much, he wore them a lot. One day when they were all finished, he asked to watch an episode of Wild Kratts about bats. He wore his wings and watched the episode then told us things he knew about bats. "They sleep upside down." He said that as he was lying on his back trying to get his feet all the way up into the air. Have I mentioned I love that kid so much?

That day was October 29, National Cat Day (not to be confused with National Black Cat Day two days earlier). I took a picture of the neighbor's cat skeleton decoration again.

It was also National Oatmeal Day but we were too busy to celebrate that day. Jeremy and Lucky volunteered to make balloon animals at the Primary Carnival the Young Women put on. Jet got to test run his bat wings and ears. He enjoyed playing games and getting prizes and treats. He also decorated a sugar cookie. 

The Young Women really put on a good event. Besides the things Jet wanted to do, they also had face painting and freeze dance contests and musical chairs and crafts. I was impressed.

We celebrated Oatmeal Day the next day, October 30, which was actually Haunted Refrigerator Night. So Lucky and I made oatmeal muffins and I fried up some eggs (from the refrigerator- Boo!) for dinner.

Earlier that day, our friend Stephanie came over to watch a spooky movie with Nichole and me while we drank hot chocolate and ate toast. Mmmmm. The movie was Something Wicked This Way Comes. I watched that movie when I was a kid and it was creepy. It's still creepy now that I'm an adult. I won't recommend it to my sensitive child.

October 31 was Halloween, National Breadstick Day, Frankenstein Friday, and National Knock Knock Joke Day. Jet and I did knock knock jokes a few days before when we were talking about that holiday coming up.

Jeremy got us donuts as a special treat for Halloween breakfast.

Jet did a really good job going in to school that day (he doesn't always). I think he was excited about Halloween and his costume. I watched Jet and Lucky in the elementary school Halloween parade. 

At home after Nichole got back from classes, she helped me make dinner. That was really helpful because besides working on the food, I was also running around picking kids up after school. 

Jet got fangs at school (which he calls a jaw- it makes sense), so a few times he told people he was a vampire bat. 

Because of Nichole's help, we were able to eat before trick or treating. Spaghetti Monsters to celebrate Halloween, National Breadstick Day, and Frankenstein Friday. 

The three youngest went trick or treating with me around the neighborhood then the whole family loaded up in the van and went trick or treating at my sister's house then went in to visit for a little bit. It's tradition. Every year, Jet talks about trick or treating at his aunt's house.

While we were out trick or treating, Jr. Jr., dressed as a jester, showed people juggling tricks and they gave him treats.

Friday the 13th

On Friday the 13th of October, we did something spooky. We went to the Butterfly Biosphere at Thanksgiving Point for their "Creatures of the Night" event. And yes, we had to say, "Creatures of the Night," in a Dracula type voice every time we mentioned it.

Jeremy had built a photo backdrop for it with several creepy crawlies on it. He wanted to include creepy crawlies that either looked spooky or had spooky names.

Death's Head Hawkmoth, Silverfish, Black Widow, Assassin Bug, Death Stalker Scorpion, and Giant Red-headed Centipede.

There were several activities there but my favorite was looking at scorpions under black light. Sooooo cool.

Halloween While Sick... Again

Then I got sick... again. I didn't feel up to doing anything except be sick for a couple days. Then I did just what was absolutely necessary the next couple days. Missed the Halloween parade at the elementary school again. Managed to get kids to and from school. Some of the kids took pictures of each other because I wasn't up to it.

When Jeremy came home from work, he took the elementary schoolers out trick or treating because Jet and I didn't feel up to going and the older kids decided not to go.

We didn't get a picture of Jeremy but he was dressed up as Waldo again.

Jet and I were sick people for Halloween. Although a different day, Jet decided to wear this Jedi robe to pick up kids from school. He looked good.

Nichole was a dragon tamer and her dragon, Ernest, was a pirate but he wasn't wearing his eyepatch by the time we got the picture.

Jr. was a magician and actually showed friends magic tricks at school.

Jr. Jr. was an alchemist. Remember when I got together for ladies' night and made some Halloween decorations- potions and elixirs? Jr. Jr. had plenty to say about what I made at the time. He took it farther and came up with his own concoctions which he put in a box to carry around- his box of alchemy supplies.

He was very creative with what he collected around the house and put together. He even got a contribution from "Dr. McCoy," (remember Halloween 2020?), a skeleton arm that had previously fallen off. And the creepy doll's head made an appearance in his box as well.

Lucky was the Eleventh Doctor because he wasn't able to do that costume last year, even though his teacher last year had a Doctor Who themed classroom. He was able to show his former teacher on Hallowen this year.

That's how Halloween went this year.

Unlike last year, I didn't get the chance to go one last time to Bridal Veil Falls to say goodbye until May. I didn't get a chance to do several things I wanted to do because of sickness. Oh well. That's life.

We did finally get the Fall colors down here in the valley, though. I love Fall colors.

Ew, That's Creepy

I went to put a recipe box away and opened the cupboard to find... a doll's head. My reaction? "Ew, that's creepy. Who did that?" Turns out, it was my husband.

After that it became a thing.

Jr. put it in the fridge (I saw him do that) but later he put it in another cupboard which surprised me when I went looking for a bowl. "Aagh."

Later Nichole moved it to yet another cupboard and I discovered it while looking for a casserole dish. "Whoa."

Since then, everybody has gotten into moving it around different places for an interesting and creepy surprise.

What's worse, though, is when Jr. Jr. put the headless doll body in a cupboard. That one really got me.

So now both the head and the body are being moved around separately and yes, sometimes do make me jump when I'm not expecting them.

I think the funniest was when I kept getting into the spice cupboard on the bottom shelf totally missing the doll head that was sitting right there on the top shelf.
