Today is National Cereal Day.

For breakfast the kids were able to choose from three different kinds of cereal. Later, Jr. wanted to watch a movie but I didn't want him to (especially since he lost the Wii game he was playing earlier from throwing too many tantrums). There are lots of other things to do, I told him. And here's where my sneaky boy got points for creativity. He asked me if he could watch a "cereal" movie. Oooh, that tricky little boy. He'd been paying attention to our celebration discussions. He knew it was cereal day. Yep, I had to go with it. If you can find a movie that has cereal in it, I'll let you watch it, since it goes along with the theme of the holiday. And he did. He picked Muppets from Space which has a scene in it where Gonzo's breakfast cereal is writing messages to him. So, Jr. had another bowl of cereal while he watched the "cereal" movie.

First of all, I have to share this link of a video my brother made for our favorite dentist. To go along with Dentist's Day tomorrow.
Then, Christine asked about this calendar that Jeremy created. He researched crazy holidays on the internet and put together a fun calendar. He's working on getting a holiday or significant event for each day of the year. Like I mentioned before, lots of reasons to celebrate.

How to celebrate Dentist's Day

This one is for you, Christine. You want to know our ideas on how to celebrate a holiday before it comes up? Well, there's a holiday coming up this Sunday that could be a special day for you and your children. March 6 is National Dentist's Day. And here are some simple suggestions of how to celebrate.

My daughter has been very interested in making toothbrushes lately. She learned how in school. She takes one piece of paper and cuts slits in it to make bristles, then she glues or tapes a different colored piece to it for the handle. The other day she made an itty bitty one that was so cute.

It is a simple activity for little kids with adult supervision.

Eat some foods that are good for your teeth- apples and milk, for example.

Practice brushing teeth instead of just chewing on the bristles or sucking on the toothpaste.

Make sure they get those back teeth.

And of course, the best activity to do with your children- making cards for that special dentist in your life.

Then send them off in the mail on Monday for a nice surprise (the cards, not the children- though I'm sure the dentist would be thrilled with a visit).

Dr. Seuss' Birthday (Read Across America Day)

The March 2011 issue of FamilyFun Magazine had some fun ideas for celebrating Read Across America Day on March 2. Since March 2 is Dr. Seuss' birthday, we took some of the FamilyFun ideas and went with it in a Seussical direction.

And how could we start but with a dinner of green eggs and ham?

Don't worry. We made sure the yolks were cooked before eating them. Say, "Ham."

Jeremy then did an animated reading of Green Eggs and Ham that really captured the kids' attention.

We enjoyed some bookworm treats (caterpillars in the kids' minds) from FamilyFun that Jr. and Jeremy made.

During Me Time this week, I sewed library bags for the kids, which I presented during our party, so now they have something to cart their books to and from the library as well as keeping them organized at home.

We brought out pillows and blankets to make the living room comfortable and let everyone relax and read or look at books for a while. And when we needed to take a break from reading (to change the occasional diaper), we had bookmark bracelets (which Jr. decided were snakes) to keep our place- also an idea from FamilyFun. Since the instructions aren't on the FamilyFun website, I'll share the basic idea from the magazine. It's really easy as you can see from my photos.

Cut a one-inch wide strip of cardstock to the shape of a worm and draw a face. Cut slits on top behind the head and below in front of the tail so they overlap to make a bracelet when it's not being used as a bookmark. That way you can keep track of the bookmark while you're getting lost in a good book.

I think my favorite part of the whole evening however was watching Nichole read to her little brother.

It was a good family party.

March Lions

March did not come in like a lion here. However, we did have a little something to do with lions. One of the servers at the Brick Oven is doing a documentary about Jeremy for a class at BYU. So, Jeremy is building a lion for the documentary. It's about halfway done. They're going to film some more later.


When it's done, it should look similar to this:

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a big storm sometime soon, but for now, we'll enjoy this kind of lion.
