Parents Day Off

September 14 was National Parents Day Off. My sweetheart and I went on a date... to get gas in the van... and to go bowling.

That was fun. I don't know that we'd ever gone bowling together before and it had been years since either of us had.
This is me trying to ask the magic eight bowling ball if I'll knock down the last two pins.

And of course for this real date, I wore my Jurassic Park shirt.
I love spending time with my husband.

Since it was also National Eat a Hoagie Day, the kids made dinner since it was our day off. They made Chilly Pheesesteaks (because I can't pronounce Philly Cheesesteaks correctly) using some provolone cheese we had in the fridge and some canned roast beef from the pantry (and other seasonings, etc. that we have). I made homemade buns/hoagies the day before so they would have those to work with and we didn't have to buy hoagies.

Chips and Cheesesteaks

March 23 was National Chip and Dip Day. Yes, I made bean dip. Yes, it had seven layers.
Earlier, though, Jet and I went out to play at a park. I am loving that there are more nice days to play. Yay, Spring!

The next day, March 24, was National Cheesesteak Day. I am loving these Cheesesteak Subs we make from a recipe from Mel's Kitchen Cafe. Yumm. And I love that we can make homemade buns from another recipe from Mel's Kitchen Cafe- French Bread Rolls
Jet of course wanted to be my baking buddy again and throw rolls and buns around while I tried to shape them.
He and I got out again that day for a walk around the neighborhood. Well, sort of. I wanted to go for a walk. Jet wanted to lie down on the ground and roll around in the dirt. Sigh. So we turned it into a game. I tried to convince him to walk back home while he decided to crawl back so I asked him what animal he was walking on all fours. I'd ask. He'd make the animal sound. A dog? Woof. Woof. A cat? Meow. An elephant? *Insert trumpeting sound* A monkey? Ooh ooh ah ah. We eventually made it back home.

By the way, I didn't tell him to make this face. That was his own decision. I don't know where he gets it from.

Not Authentic? No Problem.

March 24 was National Cheesesteak Day. I don't worry about authentic a lot as long as I can celebrate and we can create good memories and traditions. I mean just look at National Cereal Day and the tradition of having cheese and pickle sandwiches that day- not so cereal authentic is it? So I knew for this holiday I wasn't going to get real real cheeseteaks and that didn't matter.
So I turned to Mel's Kitchen Cafe once again and adapted her french bread rolls to make buns. I also adapted her cheesesteak subs recipe to make ourselves cheesesteak sandwiches. They may not have been authentic but they were tasty.

The buns turned out somewhat thin so the kids kept calling them breadsticks (thick breadsticks) and kept asking for the leftover breadsticks.
Jr. Jr. and Lucky ended up having a lot of fun with the "breadsticks" and even made a song.

Jr. Jr.: Super super breadsticks breadsticks breadsticks. Super super breadsticks breadsticks breadsticks breadsticks.
And I end it like this.
Super super breadstiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicks.
Chomp.

On another note, I asked Nichole to help me with the dough. I had her punch it down when it was time. She was such a good helper. Bwah ha ha ha. (Especially look closely at that last picture)

Not authentic? No problem. Sometimes it's fun to see how creative you can get with the holidays.
