International Respect for Chickens Day 2018

It's May the 4th.  Besides being Star Wars Day, it is International Respect for Chickens Day.

Once again we made a video of ZZ and Lucky celebrating a holiday.

A story about this video:
ZZ has experience with chickens.  Lucky does not.  He was a little intimidated at first but warmed up a bit as he helped take care of these chickens.  The kids were very careful while petting the chicken that was out.  They fed the chickens.  They collected eggs and put fluff (pine shavings) in the nesting box.
When we get eggs from these chickens, Jeremy and I are the ones who wash the eggs off before using them.  Lucky is not.  He was not used to the stuff that comes with the eggs when the hens lay them.  It scared him.  It's not like the eggs that come from the store.

National Animal Crackers Day 2018

April 18 is National Animal Crackers Day.  ZZ and Lucky got together for animal cracker eating fun.

A story about this video:
We asked the kids to guess what kind of animal they were eating.  They each had their own technique.  Lucky tried to guess what it was before he ate it.  ZZ decided to wait until after she ate to say what she thought it was.
About halfway through, for I don't know what reason, ZZ decided to have her back to the camera and was that way for most of the rest of the video.

Fish Fingers and Custard Day 2018

April 3 is Fish Fingers and Custard Day.  We celebrate by eating fish sticks dipped in vanilla pudding (much easier than making custard).

Lucky and ZZ got together again, this time to make fish sticks and vanilla pudding.  Here's the video that came from that:

A story about the video:
ZZ couldn't figure out how to say "custard day."  It kept coming out "coaster day."  She did however figure out that when you line the fish sticks up on the cookie sheet it looks like a xylophone.  I thought that was very clever.
And every time ZZ put partial pieces of fish sticks (or partially eaten pieces) on the cookie sheet, Lucky took them off.  They ended up with a nice "xylophone" of fish sticks.

Something on a Stick Day 2018

March 28 is Something on a Stick Day.  Here's a simple idea: craft stick puzzles.  You draw something on the craft sticks then mix them up and put them together again.

Both Lucky and ZZ had lined up their craft sticks for the video, but the paper we were using to cover the counter (thank goodness) got shifted and when ZZ's sticks were disrupted she didn't line them back up.  We tried to get her some more craft sticks to draw on (you can see them at the end of the video on the side of the screen), but by then Lucky was so far ahead in the instructions, we didn't want to stop him and make him start over.  So Lucky did the majority of the project on this one.  That's okay.  You should have seen it when the kids made slime together.  Lucky wouldn't even touch the stuff.  That was definitely more ZZ's project.

Also, Lucky insisted on not just introducing himself as Lucky, but as "Crazy Lucky."  What can you say?  He's 4.

National Dance the Waltz Day 2018

March 4 is National Dance the Waltz Day so grab a friend and do some waltzing.

1-2-3. 1-2-3. 1-2-3. 1-2-3.

The story behind this video:  Lucky and I watched a short tutorial about the basic waltz step.  I told him the most important thing is that it goes 1-2-3 1-2-3.  I made some music box music to go along with our waltz.  We practiced a few times to the music then got together with ZZ.  We told her the same thing.  The most important thing for a couple of 4-year olds to remember is that it goes 1-2-3 1-2-3.  They remembered that part (4-year olds are good at counting) even if it wasn't exactly to the music.  It was more exciting for them to see the music player that was playing the waltzing music so they just kept looking at that while shuffling around the floor.  Kids are fun.
