Earth Day Contest

For Earth Day, the junior high offered a contest for Earth Day related artwork or essays, etc.
Nichole and Jr. both submitted photos/artwork online and both earned prizes- T-shirts, water bottles, candy, pencils, mini globes, and tote bags. The prizes were dropped off on the doorstep so they could maintain social distancing.

Here's what they got prizes for:
Jr. photo of a pine grosbeak.

Nichole photos of snowy egret and belted kingfisher and dragonfly.

Nichole drawing of American pipit.

Way to go, kids. Keep up the good work with your talents.

Meme Boy

Jr. participated in a meme contest at his school and won! Way to go, Jr.
You already know this kid is creative. The idea for the meme is at their school, in order to have free time during a certain time of the school day, they have to have a colored slip of paper proving they are not behind in their classes. They have to show that slip in order to get to choose from different activities, hence it being "preciousss."

Later that day, since it was November 8, we celebrated Bram Stoker's Birthday and Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day. We made pizza- one pepperoni and one barbecue chicken pizza. Yumm. And of course we used garlic powder (except I totally forgot to put garlic powder and Italian seasoning on the pepperoni pizza- oops).
Lucky also showed his creativity when he was poking holes in the dough.

Amelia Earhart's Birthday

So, Amelia Earhart's Birthday was July 24.  Did anyone take my challenge to have a paper airplane contest?  Or should I be embarrassed like I said?

Jeremy printed instructions online at www.funpaperairplanes.com with lines showing where to fold.  The instructions were very easy to follow.  This is saying something from someone who normally makes paper airplanes like this:

I folded three different designs for the kids.  Nichole had a Condor, Jr. had a Spade, and Jr. Jr. had a Canard.  It was really fun to see how each design flew differently from the others.

How did your paper airplane contests go?  Did you blog about them?

Amelia Earhart's Birthday Challenge

For Amelia Earhart's Birthday coming up on Tuesday, July 24, I want to give you a challenge.

Have a paper airplane contest.  Simple, right?  Or is it?
Make it as simple or as complex as you want.  Try out different designs of airplane or just one.  Have one race to see which plane goes the farthest or have a tournament.  Try different kinds of games.  See whose plane flies the fastest.  See whose plane flies the highest.  Give special recognition for paper airplanes created by one person or by a team.  What's the simplest but most efficient paper airplane you can make?  Can you put decorations on your paper airplane and still have it fly?  Get creative (or not), but mainly, just have fun.

I want to hear about your paper airplane contests.  Let me know how they turn out?  I plan to do a follow up blog post about this (unless nobody does anything, then I'll just feel embarrassed that I brought this up in the first place, and you don't want to do that to me, do you?).  If you blog about your paper airplane contest, let me know if I can link to your post from my blog.

Have fun.

More Prizes

Remember how we won that photo contest earlier this month? Yeah, well we're still waiting for our prizes from that contest. In the meantime, my friend had a contest on one of her blogs about fitness for children. I left a comment talking about how we like to do dancing parties with our kids- turning on the music and having fun. Guess what? I was randomly selected as the winner. And... our prizes already came for that one. Yeah, they were really quick on that. So, we're still waiting for the photo contest prizes (3 weeks after I got an email saying they should be mailing the prizes out at the end of that week), but now we're enjoying our boxing punchstand set (perfect size for our kids- and it's adjustable as they get taller):

and pogo stick:

Whoo. Look at my braid go.

Currently, I'm the only one who fits the weight restrictions for the pogo stick, so it's a trip down memory lane for me. Except the old rusty pogo stick we used when I was a kid never bounced this high.
