First Day of Fall

Before I tell you about the first day of Fall, September 22, let me tell you about the day before.  September 21 is the birthday of H.G. Wells.  To celebrate, Nichole checked out "The Invisible Man" from the school library.  She read the whole thing and turned it back in to the library the next day which is why I didn't get around to getting pictures.  I commented that Nichole was quick.  Jeremy commented that she must have used a "time machine."

Now... the first day of Fall.  Great day for a walk, right?  Jeremy, Lucky, and I did go for a walk and did some birding.  We wore jackets.

That evening, even though the weather felt more like Winter than Fall (snow up in the hills), our ward hosted the 2nd annual neighborhood chili and cornbread cook-off.
It was fun to socialize and eat food.  Yumm.  It was a bit chilly but the chili was good.
Ah, Fall.

What Was I Thinking?

For some reason I thought this year would be different.  I thought this year we'd escape the tradition.  The awful tradition of someone being sick the night of the First Presidency Christmas Devotional.  And everyone was doing well, too.  Then all of a sudden today, Jeremy started feeling icky.  Poor guy.  He's been working so hard lately, it's finally catching up to him.  So here we go with that not so pleasant tradition once again.  Jeremy's sick.  He did make it through church today but got a lot worse later.
On the bright side, December 8 is National Brownie Day and even though Jeremy's sick, I felt well enough to bake brownies.  So the kids were able to eat brownies while watching the First Presidency Christmas Devotional.
Since we use the Devotional as our scripture study for the day it's on, before it started and while I was making brownies, the kids were asking each other questions about what we had been studying over the last several days.  It was cute to hear Nichole and Jr. asking Jr. Jr. about the town where Jesus was born.  I could hear their little voices coming from the "time machine" they built in their room.  Today is also Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day.
I love when the kids come up with their own ways to celebrate.

If You Were To Build a Time Machine...

what would it look like?

To celebrate H.G. Wells' birthday, September 21, I gave my children that challenge.  H.G. Wells wrote the novel, The Time Machine, so I asked them, "If you were to build a time machine, what would it look like?"

Jr.'s picture of his looks very much like a clock.

Nichole built two kinds.

We ran out of time today, but we plan to take one of Nichole's models for a test drive sometime soon.  We get to pretend like someone is going back in time to when I was a kid.

On a different note, before bed tonight Jr. requested to look at a Where's Waldo? book.  He told me, "because it's Waldo's birthday."  That kid pays attention.  Jeremy and I were mentioning to each other how this year is the 25th anniversary of when the first Where's Waldo? book was introduced in 1987 and Jr. caught on to that and wanted to celebrate.

Today is also International Peace Day.  Jr. heard me mention it at breakfast and got excited to tear off a "piece" of his zucchini bread to show me.

Whew.  Busy day for celebrating.
