Some January Fun... That Hasn't Already Been Mentioned

Sometimes you just have to dance to the music. In this case it was music from Singin' in the Rain. In fact, I think it was the song, "Singin' in the Rain."

January 15 was National Bagel Day. Breakfast sandwiches for dinner? Yes, please.

Live long and prosper.

January 16 was Appreciate a Dragon Day. Nichole wore her new dragon-themed shirt and her new dragon earrings and as is tradition, she sketched a dragon.
She and the boys also played "toss" with the dragon that she made in elementary school.

January 17 was Popeye Day. We had food with spinach for dinner including Popeye brand spinach.

One way to get exercise in during the Winter. Roll the ball down the hall and chase it.

January 18 was Winnie-the-Pooh Day. We had honey roasted carrots with our dinner. I also made granola that day but used maple syrup instead of honey because I wasn't thinking and we had syrup we needed to use up.

Sometimes in life, you just have to stop and play with monster trucks. Did you know that because they're "monster" trucks, they roar?

And this...

An Expotition

Winnie-the-Pooh Day became a two day event this year. The actual holiday was on January 18. Since Monday, January 17, was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the kids didn't have school that day so we did some of the celebrating that day.
The kids watched "Piglet's Big Movie" then we went on an "expotition." It would normally be an expedition to the North Pole (Nichole even got our Winnie-the-Pooh book out to compare the A. A. Milne stories to the mini stories in the movie). Instead of going to the North Pole, Lucky wanted to go to the South Pole because... you know... penguins.
So we bundled up, got in the van, and headed South... to Spanish Fork.
I took the kids to a place I hadn't been to in many years. Dripping Rock. You can walk along the trail and the river/stream is below. Across the river/stream there are overhanging rocks that have water dripping/pouring from them. I found out recently from Utah's Adventure Family that in the wintertime if it's been cold enough, there are icicles hanging from the rocks. I never would have thought to go there in the Winter. So that is where we went on our expedition... to see if we could find any icicles at Dripping Rock and get some "fresh" air. We've been cooped up so much with sickness and Winter and the kids had online school on Friday, we needed to get out and get some exercise.

It was good to get out. We had a good time. Jet was especially happy to get out... after he woke up. He's been cooped up more than anyone.
There were definitely icicles hanging from the rocks and foliage at Dripping Rock. Jr. Jr. got really excited to see them as we walked along and with his imagination, he could see shapes in them and started thinking about stories to go along with them.
Besides the icicles there was also plenty of water dripping from the rocks. It was neat to see in some places both together.
After the Dripping Rock area, we continued on up the path, going over some bridges then up some switchbacks (all paved, though. We saw several families pushing strollers) to the end of the trail where it met up with a road and some houses next to the golf course. We definitely got exercise. We even got to see the wind turbines since we were so close to Spanish Fork Canyon. I like wind turbines.
While we were walking along we were singing, "Sing Ho for the life of a bear. Sing Ho for the expedition." Jet was even getting into it. I'd sing, "Sing Ho," and he'd sing, "For the life of a bear," in his cute little voice.
Being a toddler, he did want things to be a certain way. He wanted to be held, he wanted to hold someone's hand while walking, he wanted to look through my binoculars, he wanted to let go of our hands and run off and he would throw a tantrum if he didn't get his way. Toddler.
It was still fun, though. Some of the boys started kicking pieces of ice down the trail as we walked. Jet wanted to be like his brothers so he was kicking ice on the trail, too.
Lucky was happy to have kicked this piece of ice all the way to the van. Way to go, Lucky.
We really did have a good time out and the kids are in agreement that we should come back sometime in the Spring or Summer to see even more dripping water at Dripping Rock. Jr. Jr. suggested we come back when it's even colder to see more icicles.

Later at home the children watched "The Lorax" because January 17 was Betty White's 100th birthday and she did one of the voices in that movie. Sadly Betty White passed away just a few weeks before she would have turned 100 but she had a long life and career and we can still celebrate that.

January 17 was also National Hot Heads Chili Day so we had chili and the kids ate spinach because it was also Popeye's birthday. Good job, kids. I made lasagna for dinner the next night because we didn't have enough time Monday. And hey, if we can celebrate Winnie-the-Pooh Day both days, we can celebrate Popeye's birthday both days, too.
On the actual Winnie-the-Pooh holiday, the kids watched more Winnie-the-Pooh movies. They had at home school that day and a couple of the kids were sick anyway.

Give Thanks

A week ago, President Nelson counseled us to experience "the healing power of gratitude." You can see his message on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints YouTube channel. You can also read the story behind his message on the Church's website.
He invited us to use social media as our own personal gratitude journal for seven days and to thank God in daily prayer. Lately I haven't been feeling very grateful even though I know that there is so much for me to be grateful for. I've been thinking too much of the stresses of life and letting it get to me. President Nelson said, "At the end of seven days, see if you feel happier and more at peace." I chose to participate in #GiveThanks and since my posts on Facebook and Instagram will get buried over the next little while, I want to share here what was in my "gratitude journal" for the past week. I'll tell you I also loved seeing what other people had to share. So I'll share Jeremy's posts as well.

Because it comes up, I will also let you know that for a week the Orem Public Library gave ideas for "No-Stress November," tips and ideas for self-care during these crazy times. Here's a quick overview of what they shared. 1. Create Art, 2. Meditate, 3. Laugh, 4. Go on vacation, 5. Write, 6. Exercise

On to my posts about #GiveThanks

November 20 (Instagram)

I am grateful for local libraries. I miss going into the libraries (new baby then pandemic. I'm also grateful for my husband, the designated library goer). I also miss the librarians. We've been able to do online activities with both Provo Library and Orem Public Library recently (and over the past several months) and this week I've been enjoying "No-Stress November." Today I "took a mini vacation." It was very mini, but while baby and I were out running errands, we stopped by the lake for just a moment. Baby slept and I took some time to look at a novel my husband is writing. I'm grateful for engaging books and my husband's writing.
(I later made this comment: Another suggestion from Orem Public Library for No-Stress November is to write.)

I'm thankful for this boy right here. We were recently given some canned goods (I'm also thankful for the people who gave those to us). He helped organize the area to put them in (he's got some skills). I'm thankful for his little brother's help with holding boxes and cans. I'm also thankful for the other kids helping with the baby so we could concentrate on the canned goods.

I'm grateful for what my family did for me today. My 10-year old sent me to my room so they could prepare a surprise for me. When I came out, I found they had cleared off the table and made Chex Mix which I love. My son wanted to make Mommy happy and got everyone else involved in it.
Later the kids made dinner.

November 22 (Facebook)
Both of my sisters are grateful for humor today so I wanted to follow suit. I'm grateful for humor.
Jr.: Ha Ha Ha Ha. Laughter.
Nichole: I'm grateful that Jet is stealing Chex Mix from my cup.
Jr. Jr. I'm grateful that Lucky can dance. And boy, can he dance.
Lucky: I'm grateful for pillows.
Nichole: I'm grateful that our awesome mom is going to let us play video games today. Just kidding.
Jr.: That's what I'm grateful for.
Our reaction when Daddy brought home chocolate chips.
Watching a movie and dancing to its music while juggling. I'm a multi-tasker.
Yep. They did get to play video games.
And boy, can he dance.

I love the fact that my wife and I have so much in common both in our upbringing and in our interests. It is not hard for us to find things we enjoy doing together. At the same time I appreciate her honesty and that she is not afraid to tell me when her opinion differs from mine. We are growing together and for that I am grateful.

November 23 (Facebook)
I'm thankful I asked the kids what they were thankful for before they fell asleep.
Lucky: I am thankful for paper... so I can write.
Jr. Jr.: I am thankful that I have a wonderful mother that does so much for this family.
Jr.: My wonderful family.
Nichole: I am thankful when we can have Family Home Evening.

November 23 (Jeremy's Facebook)
I am blessed with two great sets of parents. There is the one set that raised me, loved me despite my shenanigans, and now treat me like an adult despite some of my decisions. And there is the set I married into, who trusted me with their daughter, made me feel comfortable in their home, and treat me like an adult despite some of my decisions. I know both sets love me, and not just for the grandchildren.

November 24/25 (Instagram around midnight)

I'm grateful for my walking buddy. Sometimes he's awake and sometimes he sleeps through our outings. The last tip from Orem Public Library for "No-Stress November" is Exercise. So on a particularly stressful day, this little guy and I went out for a walk where I was able to enjoy a nice view of the lake. It felt so good and really helped. I'm also grateful for The Piano Guys because their music helped calm me as I drove to our walking spot.

November 24 (Jeremy's Facebook)
I am grateful for nature. It is one of the great stress relievers in my life. Being an introvert often I find relaxation, comfort, and am reenergized by being at home. In reality I also have five kids so home can also be taxing, chaotic, and draining. When that is the case a few hours out in the woods or by a lake away from people usually does the trick.

November 25 (Jeremy's Facebook)
I am grateful for friends. I am grateful for the variety of friends I have. I have friends on the far left and on the far right. I have friends who believe in some incredible conspiracies. I have friends who are atheist and those whose lives revolve around God. I have friends where I am the weirdest person they know, if only they knew some of my other friends! I have friend that are close enough they could be family, and some of my family are my closest friends. I have friends I have never met in person and friends I have not seen in years. I have good friends in other countries whom I worry about when things get bad over there and who worry about me in return when America goes crazy. I have many friends who would and have gone out of their way to help our little family and whom I would return the favor to in a heartbeat. I am grateful for all of you my friends!

November 26 (Instagram)

I'm grateful for our gratitude jar. We started writing down things we were grateful for and putting them in the jar before we were counseled to post our gratitude on social media. Recently I was trying to narrow down what I wanted to post and I realized I didn't have to narrow down my list. I was able to write down each thing I was grateful for on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. At least one of the things we're grateful for is humor.

November 26 (Facebook)
I'm grateful that the point of #GiveThanks is not to spam social media but to let gratitude make a difference in our lives. So I missed a couple of days of posting. During that time I had the opportunity to focus on the second part of "the healing power of gratitude." Prayer. The last couple of days I've had some very sincere and personal prayers where I was able to express my gratitude to my Heavenly Father (even during stressful times). It reaffirmed to me that He is there, He is aware of what is going on with me, and He cares. I believe this counsel was inspired of God and it has led me to have a very full heart and for that I am grateful.

I am grateful for animals that taste good.

Walking the Provo River Parkway

I wanted to walk the whole Provo River Parkway (not all at the same time- that's about 15 miles) in stretches. I did it! Well, Jet and I did it. He's such a good walking buddy. Sometimes he's awake. Sometimes he's asleep. Sometimes it's a combination. Sometimes we have to stop more than other times. Sometimes I stop anyway because of juggling. Sometimes I don't stop because Jet wants to get going. It's been great, though. I've loved it. This is my preferred form of exercise. Walking for my legs. Juggling for my arms. I don't juggle as much as I walk. I need more practice. Anyway...

Walking (and juggling) the Provo River Parkway. I went out once or twice a week, depending on schedules with my family of seven. Sometimes Jeremy would help us get the van to our ending point so we could drive home right after we were done. Sometimes we would leave the van at the starting point and Jeremy would switch vehicles when we called to pick us up. Sometimes we'd start somewhere and go farther than we originally planned. Anyway...

Vivian Park to Bridal Veil Falls- a little more than 2 miles

Absolutely gorgeous walk along here. I'm glad I went along here in the Fall. It was fun to have leaves falling around me as I walked.

Most of the canyon parts of the Parkway have the trail separated between biking and pedestrians so the cyclists can go faster. Of course as I traveled with the stroller, I would cross to the cycling part from time to time to keep my distance from other walkers and joggers (looking both ways first of course). I would also cross for sake of juggling videos. Tee Hee. Gotta get the right shot.

As I was walking along, all of a sudden I reached a point where it was very familiar. Wait, I know that bridge. I know that picnic table. I know that area. I'm almost at Bridal Veil Falls. I felt like I could have kept going. Jet slept through the whole walk.

Bridal Veil Falls to Canyon Glen Park- a little more than 1 mile

Compared to the first stretch, this one felt so short. Before I knew it, I had reached Canyon Glen Park. That park has enough trails to walk around while we waited for our ride. I stopped at a bridge I knew dippers are sometimes seen and there was one... and a boot.

Canyon Glen Park to Mt Timpanogos Park- less than 2 miles

Jet was awake when we started but he was just getting fussy (because of tiredness) when I got to a point where I wanted to take a juggling video. It was at a beautiful bend in the Provo River. Oh well. We moved on and not long after, Jet fell asleep. I was still close enough that I was able to walk back and get my juggling video.

There was another point where I could hear a spotted towhee in the brush by the trail. I could see it but not well enough to get a picture. It was still fun. I did get pictures of chickadees among some beautiful leaves on some stunning trees.

Honestly, any stretch of Provo River Parkway in Provo Canyon in the Fall is gorgeous.

After reaching Mt Timpanogos Park, we walked over the bridge to Canyon View Park to walk along the nature trail there. They have informational signs, some of them too hard to read. We went as far as the stroller allowed, even though the informational signs continued along an unpaved trail, and crossed another bridge that led back to the Parkway. We headed back on that until it connected with Mt Timpanogos Park and walked through the park to the parking lot to head home.

Mt Timpanogos Park to the mouth of the Canyon (Provo River Parkway Trailhead on 800 N Orem)- a little more than 1 mile

Nichole had a day home from school so after she got some school work done, she came out with Jet and me for our walk. It was a hot afternoon but fortunately it was a short stretch and we took refuge in the shade under a bridge while waiting for Jeremy to pick us up.

800 N Trailhead (mouth of Provo Canyon) to LDS Motion Picture Studio- about 4 miles

Out of Provo Canyon, the trail isn't separated for pedestrians and cyclists so I was confused a few times where I should walk and finally took my cues from other people. Walk and ride on the right, pass on the left. Share the trail, although this stretch had a few times where it separated and bicycles were to go one way and pedestrians go another to meet up again in just a bit.

Originally I was going to break this up into a few different days, but since this stretch was mostly sidewalk along University Avenue away from the river, I decided on the day to just go the whole distance. Jet and I had to get a little creative, however.
Jet was asleep when we started our trek. He was in the car seat in the stroller. A little after we passed Riverwoods, he woke up. I kept him in the car seat for a while entertaining him while we walked along. Once we passed the Chevron just past that cell phone tower that's made to look like a tree (you know the one), he was fussy enough that I got him out of the seat and put him in the Snugli. That was fun for a while. However, I had sunblock on, Jet did not, and the sun was shining right on our faces. It got awkward trying to push the stroller and hold Jet in the Snugli while holding a blanket up to keep the sun off him, all the while he wanted a drink or snack.

Finally, with creativity, we found something that worked. I took the car seat out of the stroller and let Jet sit up in the stroller. He could reach snacks that way and be covered enough with a blanket hanging down that I wasn't worried about too much direct sun on him for too long. I was able to get the car seat to actually fit in part of the basket at the bottom of the stroller without falling out or sticking out to hit my legs as I walked. Wow. I sure like this car seat/stroller combo.

So we started that stretch at the river and ended that stretch at the river but there wasn't much river in between.

Note: Since we finished the Parkway stretches in the canyon, a fire started that went into Provo Canyon and burned a lot of area in there. So please enjoy the pictures on my blog from before the fire.

LDS Motion Picture Studio to Lakeshore Bridge Trailhead- about 4 miles

This is another one where I wasn't expecting to walk so far but Jeremy was going to pick us up and every time we got to a stopping point, it was an inconvenient time so we kept walking along the beautiful river among the beautiful trees.

Jet was awake for the beginning but eventually fell asleep. At the very beginning he got a big kick out of my juggling. Right after juggling on a bridge for him, I looked down to the river and saw mallards cross from one side to the other in the water. Continuing to look I saw a small mammal bounding around on the rocks. It was a mink. That was fun to see.

Continuing on, I saw plenty of other animals especially lots and lots of mallards or "park ducks." We actually passed a few parks (from Park Week) so it's no surprise that it was a duck sort of day.

We stopped for some ruby-crowned kinglets at one point. Those are very fluttery birds so it was nice when they came up close and stayed still long enough for me to get pictures.

I also saw a downy woodpecker and some dark-eyed juncos. I heard lots of other birds.

We passed a 9/11 memorial and I decided not to juggle.

I juggled plenty of other places, though, including the spot where the boys threw rocks in the river during our "power outage adventure."

We went under quite a few roads and bridges on this stretch since we pretty much followed the river the entire time. At one point we went under the bridge where the Frontrunner crosses. How cool it would be to get a juggling video right as the train went across? Oh well. We moved on to get a video by the freeway and I looked back in time to see the train cross. Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Finally we reached Lakeshore Drive and the Lakeshore Bridge Trailhead. Jeremy was just then able to start heading our way. We started continuing on, thinking Jeremy could pick us up a little farther down the trail, but Jet woke up and was ready to get out so we walked back to the trailhead and I got to hold him while we waited for Jeremy to pick us up.

It was a lot of walking and my legs were stiff and sore later but it was worth it.

Lakeshore Bridge to the end of the trail- about 1 1/2 miles

Some of this stretch was familiar territory because of birding from time to time but only on certain parts of it. There were certainly some areas I'd never been. Again a beautiful walk that followed the river for the most part except for a few places you can break off and go different directions to meet back up with the main trail. I just treated those like loops so certain parts I walked twice to continue on the trail.

It was definitely Fall with leaves falling all around. Have I mentioned I love Fall?

There was a break in trees at one point where I could see all the way to Provo Canyon. It looks so far away but that's where we started (even farther up the canyon than where we could see) and we walked the 15 miles even if it was not all done in the same day.

Jet stayed asleep all the way to the parking lot at the end and woke up just as we were waiting for Jeremy. It's a good thing, too, because it was a cold day and I was able to keep him bundled up and covered in the car seat in the stroller until the end.

We did it. We made it all the way to the "end of trail" of the Provo River Parkway (known as the Provo River Trail in the city). Yay, us!
