Celebrating a Birthday Twice

Jeremy was gone at a fair during Jr.'s birthday, so we celebrated Jr.'s birthday without him then celebrated again when he got back. This meant Jr. got two birthday dinners, two cakes and frostings, and two ice creams. Why not?

Jet has decided that he is the one to place candles on cakes now. It is adorable. We obviously don't let him light them yet. It's cute to see where the placement ends up being each time. He likes to be a helper.

He only got to open presents once, though.

More Balloon Building

We sent Jeremy off to another fair over Labor Day Weekend, this one was in Twin Falls, Idaho. I love my husband and miss him when he is gone but love to see where his creative talents take him.
This time he built bugs... again. Bugs have been a popular theme lately. I love it.

Other August thins

Jr. Jr. really wants to make juggling balls so he and I have been working on that project- making juggling balls for everyone in the family. It's slow going but we'll get there.

Jet heard us talking about making juggling balls and told us he wanted to make "chocolate balls" so one day we made Oreo mint truffles like we did for St. Patrick's Day, except we didn't bother to make them green this time.

Jet is doing well at school so he's been able to pick something from the treasure box a few times. The first thing he brought home was a little water color paint set so I printed out a picture for him to color. He did a good job.

I still try out new recipes from time to time, some from A Season of Family Meal Plans by Jordan Page, some from something I see on Instagram by my favorite food bloggers. I made Slow Cooker Loaded Chicken and Potato Casserole from Six Sisters' Stuff and it tasted so good to me. I didn't have whipping cream so I combined some sour cream and milk to get the creaminess (#shelfcooking).

We had an amazing storm one night. I was concerned that my bedroom floor was getting wet. I went outside several times to check the window well. There were pools at the top of the stairs outside and in front of our front door. I checked my bedroom window and realized it was open. Rain was getting in and getting on my floor. Sigh.

Luckily it dried up quickly after closing the window. I put towels down and kept checking them.
When I went outside in the pouring rain, the lightning and thunder were flashing and booming every few seconds. There was so much of it.

It's amazing how calm the next morning can be after a storm.

When Nichole was the last one at home before she started school, she and I got to have some bonding time, going to the library and for a drive up the canyon to Bridal Veil Falls this time.

More Catching Up

August 25 was Kiss and Make Up Day. Jet and I were arguing. We stopped and gave each other a kiss on the cheek and then got along.

August 26 was National Dog Day. Jet helped make squid pups.

It was also Toilet Paper Day. We used toilet paper.

August 29 was Chop Suey Day. I just made some teriyaki. It tasted good.

August 30 was Toasted Marshmallow Day. And International Bacon Day. Nichole had this great idea to combine them. Bacon on S'mores. Why not?

August 31 was Eat Outside Day. We did.

Balloon Bonding

Real quick- August 22 was Be an Angel Day. It's become tradition to have angel hair pasta that day with alfredo sauce and chicken. Yumm.

Now to what I really wanted to blog about.

Every year, Jeremy volunteers to build a balloon sculpture in the children's section of the Orem Library for the Summer Reading Program. He's been doing it for over 15 years. This year, because of construction, they didn't have him do that. He and Lucky did teach simple balloon animals at the Kid's Art Gala and in August, they built a balloon sculpture to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the children's wing of the library.

I'm very impressed with how Lucky is picking up the balloon sculpting. He built the number 30 and the hat. Way to go both Jeremy and Lucky. I love that Lucky's getting into this and they are getting to have this bonding time together.

Since they were building on Gene Kelly's Birthday on August 23, when I went to deliver some missed items to them (I'm also a helper), I found Lucky dancing around to celebrate.
Later to also celebrate Gene Kelly's Birthday, I wore my bow earrings and pirate ship necklace and we watched "The Pirate" which Gene Kelly was in with Judy Garland.

That evening, we went to an end of the Summer neighborhood barbecue. I had a great time socializing. I love our neighborhood.

I Forgot

I'm always telling my children, if I don't write it down I won't remember it. Unfortunately, even when I remember to write things down, sometimes I forget to read what I wrote. Sigh. This happens with my to do list as well as writing down what we celebrated to later blog about.
Here's an example. I wrote this down more than a month ago. Recently I was going through things I had written down to catch up on my blog and completely missed it even though it was right in front of me. I was blogging other things but not this. It's not a big thing but I did intend to blog about it. And here's the fun part about showing my personality while blogging. This whole introduction thing is longer than the whole thing I wanted to share.

Tell a Joke Day was August 16.
On that day, Jeremy said this: Wow. That 30 seconds went really quick. It didn't feel more than half a minute.

There. I got it out of my system. And to leave you with another something, as Jeremy was getting ready for yet another trip, Jet wrapped himself in Jeremy's suitcase and insisted he was going. I told him he had to stay home because he had school. His response?
Jet: I'm going on a trip. Daddy's going to school.

Shelf Cooking

Here's a little shelf cooking I did on August 19, National Potato Day.
I didn't have any fresh potatoes so I pulled out some potato gems to make mashed potato volcanoes with gravy lava, broccoli trees, "those poor people" raisins, and some dino nuggets because dinos and volcanoes just work.
And don't tell me people and dinosaurs wouldn't exist at the same time because I'm a Jurassic Park fan, remember?
I picked a zucchini from our garden that morning and sauteed it for the side because I wanted it but couldn't figure out how it would fit into my volcano scene.

I asked friends on Instagram and Facebook if anyone had any ideas for next time to let me know. I got several responses from people on Facebook from a Zucchini Dune Sandworm to gravestones for lava covered dinos. I love it when people help me figure out how to celebrate.

Daredevil

One of the things we're growing in our garden is jalapenos. When they've been left too long they turn from green to red. That is a sign that they are spicier. Lucky goes for spicy foods. He wanted to eat a whole jalapeno, seeds and all (I will often take the seeds out for myself). I told him the red ones were spicier. He wanted a red one. O.K.
I'm not sure if he regretted it or not but it definitely affected him (not in an actual harmful way- it's still just a jalapeno).
He looked red to me (he usually has a pretty pale complexion) and he did get the hiccups. That is a sign of something spicy getting to you.
I wonder how long until he does it again.

School Begins

Before school started we picked up final prizes for Jet who was participating in "1000 Books Before Kindergarten." We'd finished 1000 books a while back (that kid likes books like the rest of the family). We just hadn't gotten around to recording them and picking up the last of the prizes. So we did.
He got a bag, certificate, sticker, and book from Orem Library and he picked a flashlight from the treasure box at Provo Library.

We went to Back to School Nights for Jr. Jr. and Lucky and Jet, and Kindergarten assessment for Jet.

I saw Jr. Jr.'s schedule and this is the conversation that came from it.
Mom: You're taking Earth and Space Science? How cool is that?
Jr. Jr.: It's out of this world.
-Later-
Jr. Jr.: Earth and Space Science. You can tell you're in the right classroom because it's always vacuumed.
He also had clever things to say after school started.
Jr. Jr.: When I get a homework assignment, I spend the first few days in de-Nile.
Mom: Is that a geography joke?
Jr. Jr.: Yes, because I'm doing geography right now.
Jr. Jr.: What river is labeled 8?
Mom: It's in South America.
Jr. Jr.: The river labeled 8 is where all your packages come from.

What do you do when you have a child who loves school so much they are anxious for the first day of school to start?
Give them a task. Sharpen pencils. That will help when it's time for homework.

How does a child who does not like school combat the frustration of it?
He takes juggling balls with him wherever he goes at school and at home. He impressed quite a few people who didn't know he could juggle, which he couldn't last school year.

I got first day of school pictures for the kids (we had four different first days of school this year), except for Jr. I got first day at his apartment pictures. I had a little Nemo toy that I used to tell everyone, "First day of school. First day of school," that morning.

While the middle boys were at their first day of school (less kids in the house), I did something useful. I put together some freezer meals, using recipes that used ingredients we had at home so I didn't have to go shopping for anything. I put directions on the bags so I don't have to look up the recipes when it's time to make them. Go, me! Woohoo.

After one of the first days of school, we went to the annual Utah County Birders potluck. So nice to be around other birders. We've been so busy, we haven't been out birding much. Sigh. And the monthly meetings, I usually join online instead of in person. Also sigh.

I must say, though, my kids are awesome. They helped clean up after the potluck, even though they had school the next day.

The first Saturday after school started, I did something for myself. I went to "my spot" by the lake to watch the "sunrise"- which actually means I watched the other direction from where the sun rose. I watched the light come across the lake from the mountains on the other side until it reached me then the sun was to my back when it came up over the mountains. That's how I usually like to watch the sunrise.

After Jr.'s first day of school, we picked him up and went to another BBQ/cookout.
Jeremy: Do you want to go to this cookout? You don't have to figure out dinner.
I was in favor of that. Jeremy previously made a balloon arch for this cookout so we were able to get some pictures.

Another day, before Jet and Nichole started school, they went with me on a drive up Kyhv Peak Road. Nice drive and view.

I highly recommend this.
We keep a pocket sized copy of The Book of Mormon in our vehicle.
Now that school has started, that means more sitting around waiting to pick up kids. I get busy some mornings and don't get a chance to read my Book of Mormon. So even though I often have a physical novel in my bag, an audiobook on my phone, I realized I could get something even better out of my wait by reading what is always available to me.
